Money honey! Who has any?

Sounds like a Broken Record: In recent studies… Studies show that…

A science & technology proof driven society is finally getting all their proof. now enough with spending all this money to test these theories, more money in programs that actually educate people about access and healthy lifestyle please mr. congressmens

Am i wrong to notice that these health studies have gone on for a decade now – in proving that a diet rich in processed crap and junk “convenience” foods  cause preventable diseases like type II diabetes, heart disease, and cancer?!

Thank you NYT, for finally connecting the fact that HIGH HEALTH costs are due to poor diets in this country.

We on the food side have been arguing this “duhhhh” for months now. years even…and there’s not much to argue about — it’s a cause and effect.  Especially since the instant gratification of people going “life’s too short, eat it anyway!” is not all just smoke and mirrors anymore, while s/he pops another cheeto into his/her mouth…  In my experience — that “BAM!” wow flavour and crunch only lasts 2 seconds anyway, but the after effects make me feel like crap for days on end. Blech :P

Also poverty is on the rise, never has it been this bad before in this country according to many sources including this other NYT article. Sad, yes. Surprising? No, not really.  More and more people are needing “nutritional assistance” in the form of food stamps, aka, the newly renamed program called SNAP, and over 90% of the users are below the poverty line.

for a quick reality check about the poverty line – a family of 4 with a combined income of under 22,000 a year is considered impoverished in this country. — umm, the last time i checked, a COLLEGE GRADUATE CANNOT EVEN SURVIVE OFF OF 20,000 A YEAR ANNUAL. BEFORE. TAXES. never mind student loans…rent, and oh right, food. That is if they can even get a job in this economy in what they now want to spend their adult lives “doing”.

My dear food studies friend Nick yesterday asked a very good question — we all ponder where studying food is really going to get us traditionally each and every day we’re in this program, but deciding to follow our cultural revolution instincts, we can’t help but wonder about our practical nature too.  We also worry about our finances, the cost of grad school, and how we want to change the world and where we’re going to get the resources to do so.  Tons of these initiatives are in their birthing and germinating stages, but how you gonna feed a baby?  Where are/do we get funds to transfer initiatives from grass roots orgs into national programs that are not only non profit?

“If learning about debt and finances, and how to MAKE money is so important to our survival, WHY DON’T THEY TEACH THIS STUFF IN SCHOOL?!”

Any Math teachers out there wanna hit this up?  Advocate and teach us how to rewrite curriculum?  Incorporate a lil real life skills all up in therrrrr?  Because if memory serves me right, I got A’s in Algebra and Calculus in High School, but I surely can’t for the life of me remember how to apply those quadratic equations, functions, and parabolas to help me feed myself and lead a healthy lifestyle.  And when/if i’m sick — nothing else matters in my world. Nothing. IF i don’t have my health, I have nothing in life.

I’m left counting my own beans now… hopefully a few will germinate so I can eat them too.

…one fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish.

Viva la revolution!
