Gluttony: Entitlement vs. Responsibility

Sick and tired of being sick and tired? I’ll say!

It is clear from the million of quantitative and qualitative articles in the past 48 hours on food nutrition issues in Schools all across America, that there is an increasing national health crisis, an epidemic on the raise since the early two thousands and a decade in the making…

that “Obesity appears to be the new enemy. it brings with it the plethora of health problems necessary to qualify as a public enemy – diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and more. it is a disease that could exact a very high public health and social cost.  It appears to be a public sin caused by eating too much, denoting a lack of self-control that in turn engenders embarrassment and feelings of self-loathing.  This disease is complicated by the contemporary societal standard of beauty, which is defined as thin, leaving the obese to suffer consequences that are not only physical but also psychological.” (from the Elizabeth m. Williams’ article in summer 2006 issue of Gastonomica, “The Sixth Deadly Sin”) wait isn’t that GLUTTONY?! … oh yea, it is. what a double entendre

Gluttony in freedom, in excess, in abundance. in CHOICE.

but isn’t “the very foundation of choice based on access to information”? – Ellen Freid, Food Policy Professor, and Attorney in Food Law.

Hmm, so how can we have an arguement about self control, self responsibility, and or blaming the parents of these children who are getting fat from eating “American Food”, fast food, junk food, cheap calories, snacks with the very nature of providing in between meals that supplement calories, taste, and cravings when your basic nutrient requirements aren’t even met with substantial daily meals (and then some! check! all of the above…) WHEN proper nutrition education is what’s lacking in the public’s eye.

Education. is this not what people are entitled to?

Health. Food. Clean Water.

why is it that i get pounded on when i DO say, i feel people, children, are entitled to free lunch. why go halfway and offer food but have to sort through trying to define what fits guidelines, resources, money,

go big or go home no?

“We have changed from a country whose wealth has made people grow taller and be healthier to one whose very wealth and sense of plenty have become the problem. Now we must try to impose balance on ourselves, and this is no mean trick.” – elizabeth m. williams

so who begins this process? How and Where do we start to draw the lines of responsibility and to say that the government is in charge, is responsible, to provide people with a baseline of care (perhaps it’s cuz i grew up in a system that capitally doesn’t seem fair with high taxes taken away for exactly these kinds of implementations, but at the end of the day i felt taken care of, that the govn’t had taken responsibility for the bottom line of my well being as a citizen) and when do we personally take charge of our own health, of our own fates, of our own lives?

“Whom can we blame for a society that has finally become so rich that gluttony is a real sin, not a theoretical one? [I don't think we should even play the blame game anymore, and i'm sick of hearing the blame throw all over the place.] Perhaps, it is only the devil finally getting his due. after roasting all those scrawny sinners, maybe he needed a few fat ones who would be tender and self-baste.” – elizabeth m. williams
(and the cynical side of me laughs at that image. hahaha…)

so going back to the free choice and personal responsibility –

President Obama even declares that every kid deserves a healthy lunch, so are the entitled to one under birth right of this country?

Is this the new Food Movement??

are we ready to implement change?! -

I sure know ppl are tired of hearing about our underprivileged next generation turning into sick fat dumb and kids in schools.

For one – SLOW FOODS USA – is definitely working on it. and I am GAME ON.

Holla if you feel the same.

This movement needs some extra Love…

and “Where there is Love, there is Life” – Mahatma Gandhi
